Star Ledger Covers Skate Park Opening

The opening of the skate park is big news here in New Jersey.  Here is the article that ran this past Sunday in the Star Ledger.

Skate park opens in Livingston after years of dreaming

LIVINGSTON — Among concrete grind boxes and a vert wall, a handrail and stairs, Brett Traiger has found a small slice of heaven.

So have dozens of other Livingston skateboarders, who, after decades of dashed dreams, now have a place to ply their stunts and tricks.

“I come every day,” said Traiger, 15 over the sounds of a dozen wood boards slamming on concrete in the background on a recent afternoon. “And for as long as I can on weekends.”

Tucked in between the township police department and the YMCA, the Livingston Stake Park opened earlier this month after decades of lobbying by skating aficionados.

“We were looking for a safe place for the kids to skate,” said Alan Karpas, co-chair of the township’s skate park committee. “It was all about the kids, getting them out of the parking lots.”

Building a Skate Park

Here is a montage of images highlighting the construction process as well  as the opening night ceremony.

The next step for the skate park is to raise money for a mini ramp and to extend the skating surface.  Check back here for updates on our fund raising efforts.

Skate Park Officially Open.

What a great day it was for the opening of the Livingston Municipal Skate Park.  There were close to 200 people in attendance.  We will be having photos and video clip0s from the day very soon. Thanks to David Schwartz from Essential Communications for supplying the sound system for the opening ceremonies.   In the meantime visit the Facebook fan page for the skate park.  Also check out the coverage from The Alternative Press.

Skate Park Grand Opening Scheduled for June 10th

Construction of the Livingston Skate Park is nearly complete.  The Skate Park Committee is planning the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, June 10th at 6pm.  There will be a skating demonstration and a chance to be the first “official” skater on the park.

All those wishing to skate on opening night must be registered prior to the opening of the park.  Registration needs to be done in person between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays at the Senior/Community Center located at 204 Hillside Avenue in the Senior, Youth and Leisure Services (SYLS) Department.  Registration forms will also be available at the Haines Memorial Pool Open House near the High School on Saturday, June 5th from 2-5pm.  There will also be registration along with a sneak peek of the completed park from 4-7pm on Tuesday, June 8th and Wednesday, June 9th at the skate park located between the new Municipal Complex and the West Essex YMCA.   Registration will also take place at the grand opening.

Participants under the age of 18 must register with a parent present to sign a liability waiver.  Each registrant will be issued a permit in the form of a decal which must be affixed to the rider’s helmet for use of the park.  This rule will be strictly enforced.  There is no registration fee.  Use of the park is for Livingston residents only.  Any questions about obtaining the decal should be directed to the SYLS department 973-535-7925.

They Shoot Skate Parks Don’t They?

Now I know why they call it Shotcrete.  This was a very intense process that produces the best skating surfaces.

Lot’s of Concrete Being Poured

The Skate Park construction team has had a couple of cement mixers make deliveries this week.. The forms were built only waiting for the concrete to arrive was the longest part.  Here are some photos and a video clip.  I am told that we are on schedule for an opening of the park in mid June.

Skate Park Taking Shape

I visited the skate park site and saw the full Hardcore team in action.  I took some photos including some from the roof of the YMCA (thanks Helen and Larry) showing the beginning stages of construction.  If you get a chance take a ride over and see how the park is progressing.
